Effective Results for Restricted Rational Approximation to Quadratic Irrationals

In this paper, we deduce a number of effective lower bounds upon the distance to an integer of quantities of the shape bnξ, where b and n are integers and ξ is a real quadratic irrational. For certain ξ, we obtain inequalities that approach in strength the corresponding ineffective results arising from the p-adic version of Roth’s theorem.

Approximation to Irrationals by Classes of Rational Numbers

if and only if k^l/51'2. Scott [ll] proved that if the fractions a/b are restricted to any one of the three classes (i) a, b both odd, (ii) a even, b odd, or (iii) a odd, b even, the same conclusion holds if &=g 1. Other proofs of this have been given by Oppenheim [8], Robinson [lO], and Kuipers and Meulenbeld [6]. Robinson also showed that if any pair of these classes were used, then &2il/2. L...

Rational Approximations to Rational Models of Categorization

Can statistical machine learning theories and algorithms help explain human learning? Broadly speaking, machine learning studies the fundamental laws that govern all learning processes, including both artificial systems (e.g., computers) and natural systems (e.g., humans). It has long been understood that theories and algorithms from machine learning are relevant to understanding aspects of hum...

Rational Approximations to Category Learning 1 Running head: RATIONAL APPROXIMATIONS TO CATEGORY LEARNING Rational approximations to rational models: Alternative algorithms for category learning

Rational models of cognition typically consider the abstract computational problems posed by the environment, assuming that people are capable of optimally solving those problems. This differs from more traditional formal models of cognition, which focus on the psychological processes responsible for behavior. A basic challenge for rational models is thus explaining how optimal solutions can be...
